What is The Salkantay Trek

What is the Salkantay trek?

Get to know the Salkantay trek: an alternative trail to Machu Picchu
The Salkantay Mountain is part of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range in the Andes near Cusco, Peru. It sticks out in the area because it is surrounded by valleys and smaller mountains. Salkantay(6261 m)  is the 38th highest peak in the Andes and is the 12th highest in Peru. The mountain was first climbed to the top by an American-French group in 1952. Right to the north of the Salkantay Mountain is Machu Picchu. When you are at Machu Picchu and view Salkantay and compare it to the sundial, you can see what the Incas used to refer to their ideas of rain and fertility. They thought of the Salkantay Mountain as a god or Apu which controlled the weather and fertility. There are few ways to spell Salkantay, Salcantay and even Sallqantay in Quechua! The name Salkantay is actually from the word sallqa in Quechua meaning wild or savage, so Salkantay Mountain is sometimes referred to as "Savage Mountain" as well.Since the Salkantay Mountain is close to Machu Picchu, it makes a great area to go trekking on your way to Machu Picchu. And since the Classic Inca Trail can book full quickly, it’s a great alternative because it also has certain parts which include authentic Inca trails and ruins. There are a few options which can take to around 5 days or less, depending on where you want to stop and the route you choose.
Remember to acclimatize a few days beforehand when you sign up for a Salkantay trek and come prepared for an intensive but satisfying hike to Machu Picchu!
